How to Fight the New Bullies By: Rosalind Wiseman
This article deals with the newest form of bullying which is cyberbulling. The article gives information on bullying as well as was to stop it. At the very end of the article it gives some statistics that really shocked me. “90% of middle school students have had their feelings hurt online.” I was amazed at how high those numbers are. The article says that schools are trying to figure out ways to lower the numbers. They are changing bullying laws to include cyberbullying in them. They are also trying to make laws so that bullying that happens off campus to other students can be penalized. The does a good job of explaining why this statistic is so high. Children often don’t see what they are doing on the computer to have any consequences in the real world. Many students say things and do things online that they would never do in person. Hopefully soon schools will have consequences for the student’s actions since obviously parents are not doing the job.
How can a teacher stop cyberbullying?
I think it’s a teacher’s responsibility to talk to their students about the internet and the consequences that can result from it. Student’s need to understand that what they do on the internet can affect them in life. Many people doing realize that they are talking to another person and not a screen. I think that it’s a teacher’s job to help the students realize that they need to respect others online the same way they should in the classroom. I think it is a teacher’s responsibility to teach students rules if they are going to use computers in the classroom.
Should schools be able to punish students for their behavior out of school?
I think that if two students are talking outside of school and one is being a bully that the school should have a right to stop it. Even if bullying does not take place on campus it still affects the child when they are there and have to interact with the kids that bullied them. It is the schools job to make students feel comfortable and safe at school so they can gain the education they deserve. This can not happen if a child is has been threatened by other students whether it was on or off campus.

From Toy to Tool By: Liz Kolb
The article “From Toy to Tool” deals with using cell phones inside the classroom as tools for assignments instead of the toys that teachers usually see them as. Many schools ban cell phones in schools with the fear that students will be text messaging instead of working as well as using them to cheat. This article shows how cell phones can actually benefit teachers. Cell phones many times have recording features on them as well as camcorders and cameras. Even ones that don’t have any of these can still be used at video recorders using Audioblogging through different 1800 numbers. This article was interesting because cell phones have always held a negative view in schools, with many schools banning them altogether. This article shows how instead of banning something that is part of many people everyday life the ways that even cell phones can be incorporated into classroom assignments.
What is another project students can do using Audioblogging?
A project that I think would be fun for the kids is interviewing their parents/guardians. By having children interview their parents; their parents are able to see what they are doing with their cell phones and better understand how they are being used. This also gives the children time to get to know their parents/guardians and allows them to find out things they may have never known before (ex. did you have a dream job as a child?). If the children do a project on their parent/guardian students who don’t have cell phones can use their houseline instead and still get a feel for how the program works.
Can this be used in an elementary school classroom?
I think that a fewer number of students will have cell phones in elementary school but that the project is still do able. Teachers can get grants to try and get a few cell phones for the class to share or can use their home phones to do interviews. Video in the age of participation By: Glen Bull
The article by Glen Bull deals with using video in the classroom. Many teachers are beginning to switch from the cassette where they spent large amount of time fast forwarding to get to the section to the quicker and more efficient online video. With online video teachers are able to pin point exact points to start, edit out unwanted material and put different videos together to make one. The article talks about a website can DEN where teachers are able to edit and remix videos and then place this them online for others to see. This allows teachers to take videos and cut unwanted sections so they only have to use appropriate materials. This program is becoming very popular but the only downfall is only member can access the materials.
Should all people be allowed to access the DEN materials?
I think that all schools should gain access to the materials for their teachers. The materials on DEN are edited so that only what pertains to the copy remains on the video. This would help teachers who otherwise would have to go through the trouble of opening 5 videos up and showing clips of each. I think that if technology such as this was available in every classroom teachers would be much more willing to add videos into their lessons. So although I understand why a company wants to charge for its services I think teaching materials should be open to everyone.

Breathing Fire into Web 2.0 By: Justin Hardman and David Carpenter
This article deals with a technology called myDragonNet. This software was build in Hong Kong International School to help students and teachers have a resource like other web 2.0 software. The software allows teachers to post assignments and share their information with other teachers. “It is as if all the teachers’ file drawers are open for easy searchable browsing by other teachers.” This allows teachers to share their ideas with others and gain new ideas for their own classes. From the how the article describe myDragonNet, it seems to be a mix of myspace and webct. It allows students to turn in work, see others work, communicate with their class, learn about events and design their own page. Students are able to have their own space that they can have their notes and work in as well as share this space with others. It’s a place for both teachers and students to share and learn from each other.
How can this program help children?
I believe this program is very beneficial for students. It will help shy children to be able to show their work in an environment that may seem much safer then a classroom. It also allows students to show their creativity. I think that having a safe place such as this for students to be able to hear information about school as well as communicate with others is very important. If a student misses class they can jump on a computer and easily catch up. They no longer have to wait to ask a question they had but instead can jump online and communicate not only with their teacher but other students. I think a program like this would help students to be more productive as well as creative.
Why is this program not implemented in every classroom worldwide?
I think a big reason we do not see programs such as this worldwide is cost. Many schools don’t want to spend the money on the program or the training it would cost to implement this into their school system. I think it’s a shame that schools don’t have a program for reasons such as this, but many times that’s the case. Some schools also believe that teaching is supposed to be lecture and only happen at school and that it’s not important to enhance education with technology. Whatever schools reasons are I think it’s a shame that more schools have not realized the value of technology and tried to catch up with the changing world.

Finding new ways to connect By: Eleanor Yang Su
This article deals with how technology is changing how students function in the classroom. Although technology can add many things to the classroom it can also cause problems. Students tend to multitask more often then they used to which causes more things to get done, but at a lower quality. The article also goes into the positives that can go along with having technology in schools. Teachers have begun to use technology to help students become more engaged. They do this through using technology such as clickers, online experiments and more. Through technology teachers are keeping in better contact with their students. Although it is not face to face interaction more students are communicating with their teachers via the computer. Many schools have set up class websites, campus e-mail and some even instant messengers to help teachers and students stay in contact. This article showed both the negatives and positives to technology being brought into the classroom.
How can you cut down on multitasking in the classroom?
I think the most important way to cut down on student distractions is by engaging the students. Students can lose their concentration very quickly and it is important for a teacher to be able to adapt their teaching to deal with this problem. Lecturing for 10 minutes and then showing pictures, video helps students to keep their focus. I think that interacting with students is also very important. Doing projects such as wikipedia where students are building their own encyclopedia help students to be more engaged with their learning.
Should teachers have to use “bells and whistles” to keep students concentration?
I think that its important for teachers to realize that students today have been brought up in a technology based world and that they need to adapt their teaching style to this. I know some teachers don’t believe that its their job to entertain their students. It is however their job to educate them. If using up to date technology is going to help students learn then I think its important to incorporate that into my classroom. It’s a teachers job to teach the students in a way that they can learn not in the way they prefer.
