Hi! My name is Melissa Kaplan. I was born in San Diego and have lived here all of my life. I lived in Mira Mesa until I was 18 and then moved up to San Marcos so I could be closer to school. I went through all of my schooling in Mira Mesa. I went to Hickman elementary, Challenger Middle School and Mira Mesa High. I’m in my last year at Cal State San Marcos and plan on going to the credential program in the fall. I have wanted to be a teacher since 3rd grade and hope that I can find a good job in San Diego area. I love San Diego and plan on living here as long as I can afford to. With house prices rising though I don’t know how long that will be.
I am a PC user and have very little experience using a Mac. So far I have enjoyed how user friendly the Mac is and may decide in the future to switch over. The computer is a big part of my life since I have so many friends in the military that I keep in contact with via e-mail. I am highly dependent on technology and love my computer, cell phone and digital camera. I wouldn’t say I’m great with technology but I’m always open to learn how to use new things.
I have attended Cal State San Marcos for three year now and until this class had never read the mission statement for the college of education. I like that the mission statement talks about diversity. I have taken 3 classes so far at Cal State that have focused primarily on teaching diversity. I think it is important for teachers to understand this concept so they can later pass it on to their students. I also like the part about student centered teaching. I have found that many of my classes at Cal State have been student centered and have given me a great model of how I will teach when I get my own classroom.
